Starting Joint Development of Overhead Transmission Line Diagnostic System Utilizing AI
Aim for simultaneous achievement of sophistication of anomaly detection and substantial efficiency improvement & cost reduction

Tokyo Electric Power Grid Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Tadanori Kaneko, hereinafter “TEPCO PG”) and Technos Data Science Engineering Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Naohiko Shiroya, hereinafter “TDSE”) today announced that from November 9th, an overhead power transmission line diagnostic system utilizing artificial intelligence (hereinafter “AI”) based on Microsoft’s cloud Microsoft Azure *1 (Hereinafter “this system”) will be jointly developed. Both companies aim to start operation of this system from the first half of 2018.
To confirm the overhead power transmission line, TEPCO PG usually inspects from the ground with a high magnification scope by a maintenance worker, goes up to the steel tower, hangs on the transmission line, and inspects with a dedicated equipment.
However, for some overhead power transmission lines, such as mountainous areas that maintenance workers can not easily confirm, we used VTR taken with a helicopter and inspected by slow motion playback. Therefore, it took a long time for this work.
Therefore, it is indispensable to conduct efficient soundness checks aiming at further cost reductions in conjunction with improvement of inspection quality in the future.
Since its establishment, TDSE has over 200 themes of consulting and analysis experience in major companies such as finance, manufacturing, distribution and information services. We have abundant know-how and experience of building AI, and we also offer our own developed AI product “scorobo®” *2.
In addition, by utilizing its know-how, we provide IoT data analysis solutions such as “anomaly detection solution” and promote demonstration experiments and joint projects mainly for companies in manufacturing industry.
This time, we jointly developed a system that combines VTR photographing data and inspection technology of overhead transmission line of TEPCO PG with TDSE’s AI and Deep learning technology. This system expects advanced inspection of abnormality detection and shortening of inspection work time by 50% or more by AI performing inspection work by VTR which workers had confirmed until now.
In developing this system, we also aim to be able to automatically detect abnormalities in VTR data taken with a drone who is considering introduction in overhaul transmission line inspection work in the future.
Through this development, TEPCO PG will strive to ensure stable supply of electric power while promoting sophistication of power plant conservation technology and further cost reduction. In addition, TDSE aims to develop service efficiency improvement service using AI, including this joint development.
